The origin of vodka remains a mystery. It is certain that the origin of vodka came from either Russia or nearby Poland. Both Russia and Poland have a well-liking for vodka. The word Vodka is Russian, in its original form voda is defined as water. However, this is contradictory because of its great popularity and notoriety in Poland. Also, Persia has become a possibility for the origin of vodka. Vodka history can be traced back to about the twelfth century. Vodka is said to be developed first for strictly medical purposes. Vodka is derived from rye that has been distilled and was then widely utilized as an effective disinfectant and anesthetic. It took several centuries, before vodka was noticed for its intoxication traits. In the 1300’s. vodka had become a drink of choice, and individuals began to make it for solely it’s drinking attributes.
In Russia, vodka was often utilized for religious purposes and believed that each drink possessed its own spirit. A large container of Vodka, actually more than a gallon would be distributed among a grouping of people who were celebrating some religious occasion. When an individual declined a drink it was taken as an insult. When banquets began in the seventeenth century, as a prominent function for Russians to indulge, it became a traditional beverage that was served frequently to the guests and hosts. Vodka was originally made of distilled rye, however as vodka became mass produced in bulk it was made out of potatoes. It is said that potato vodka does not taste as good as rye vodka. Potato Vodka was an easier method and simpler to come by potatoes as an ingredient rather than rye. Gradually distilleries were born, and grain was integrated as the main ingredient that was best for making the fine premium vodka. In the present time, most vodka brands utilize barley, grains, corn, and rye that are distilled, refined at high proofs, and then ran through charcoal to be filtered.
